Erna Karim was born in Surabaya, 22 Juli 1953. She graduated in Sociology from Faculty of Social and Politic Sciences, University of Indonesia in 1979 by writing (thesis) titled: Partisipasi masyarakat Pedesaan Terhadap Program KB, Kasus di Kecamatan Empat Nagari, Kabupaten Sawah Lunto-Sijunjung, Sumatera Barat. She earned her master degree in two universities. First, master degree Sociology in Universitas Kebangsaan Malaysia, and second master degree Sociologi Pedesaan in Institut Pertanian Bogor (IPB). Then she continue her study in Departement of Sociology, Faculty of Social and Political Sciences, University of Indonesia by her writing thesis titled: Konstruksi dan Rekonstruksi Masyarakat Ideal, Studi Komunitas Spiritual Reikitummo di Indonesia. Now she is the leader of Sociology degree program (S1), Faculty of Social and Political Sciences, University of Indonesia. Besides of her teaching activity, she was leader of Lembaga Pengembangan Sumberdaya Keluarga and as a consutant of family problem and marriage in LPSK Indonesia.
