profile

After receiving my graduate degree in 1987 from University of Indonesia, I continued my post-graduate education in the field of anthropology at University of Chicago. Prior to my study in the United States, however, I participated in the post-graduate training of the University of Leiden in the Netherlands for three years (1983-1986). Returning to Indonesia after this pursuit of knowledge at the University of Chicago, I taught at University of Indonesia until 1994. In 1999, I decided to help establishing the Cybermedia College (a multimedia education institute) where I ever resided in its Board of Directors. I’ve ever also served as one of the firts chairman of  Forum Kajian Antropologi Indonesia (Forum of Anthropological Studies in Indonesia). On July 15, 2008, I was awarded a Doctoral degree from the Department of Anthropology, Faculty of Social and Political Sciences, University of Indonesia with judicium Cum Laude.

In the past 15 years, I have been involved in major national and international workshops, seminars, and conferences. I gave workshop on Artistic Representation in Social Action: the Case of Bali at the University of Princeton, New Jersey, USA (July 8-13, 1991), and Balinese State and Society at the University of Leiden, Leiden, the Netherlands (April 21-24, 1986). I was also a presenter in the international conference on the role of Science and technology for the Indonesia National Development at the Ohio University, Athens, Ohio, USA (September 1989), and the Role of Private Sector and Government in Strengthening National Resources at the Iowa University, Ames, Iowa, USA (August 1991). In addition, I conducted intensive fieldworks on various cultures in Indonesia. My area study interests are Buton, Bali and Irian; while my themes interests are Diasporic Network and Mobilization; Power and Subjectivity; Cultural Discourse and Indentity;  Myth, Narative and Peotics; and Language and Culture. Besides a number of articles written for Kompas, I recently published a book with the title Kekuasaan, Sejarah dan Tindakan (Penerbit: Rajawali Pers, 2009).
