Abstract Distribution edible sea bivalve and the economic potential in the coastal and shallow waters, near latitute 0o36'-2o47' S and langitute 99o21'-101o,8''E in juridistion of West Sumatera Provincial, were studied from November 2006 to February 2008. They were collected with survey method and stratified systematic sampling. The sampling locations divided besad on intertidal area and investigated at shallow water at mudflats front mangrove forest by using belt transects with frame 1x10 m2 divided in 10 subplot. The results of obsevation were found 10 spesies edible sea bivalve e.i. famyli Verenidae (Desinia spp., Paphia spp., Gafrarium spp., Katalysia spp., Marcia spp., Meretrix spp., Tapes spp.), famyli Arcidae (Anadara spp.), famyli Donacidae (Donax spp.) dan famyli Ostreidae (Saccostrea spp.). Abstract Population dynamics of the clam Gafrarium tumidum (Roding, 1798) were studied in December 2006, Maret 2007 dan Januari 2008. Clams were collected with survey method and stratified systematic sampling. The sampling locations divided based on substratum depth, area zonations and investigated at shallow water by using belt transects with frame 1x10 m2 divided in 10 subplot. The highest mean density of G. tumidum was 9.9+/-1.1 ind.m-2 at >2-6 cm substratum depth in habitat sand-gravelflats and 6.1+/-1.8 ind.m-2 on the substratum surface at habitat mudflats. The maen density and length-frequency distribution of G. tumidum were difference at each substratum depth and area zonations in differ habitat. Besad on sampling period, the maen highest density of G. tumidum were 16.77+/-6.1 ind.m-2 in March 07 with the lowest maen shell length (mm), indicating spawning had occurred. The vertical distribution and density fluctuation of clams influenced by substratum particles size and salinity, temperature. The
